A crock pot, or a slow cooker, can be used to provide delicious tasting meals for you and your family. If you are ready to use your crock pot for the first time, then here are a few simple tips that you should keep in mind.
Know Your Time Limit
One of the most important things that you’ll want to pay close attention to is the cook time that is required for your dish. Why? You don’t want to overcook your food items do you? Letting your food cook for too long can result in a dried out and dull tasting meal. Make sure you are fully aware of how long your items are suppose to remain in the crock pot. When timed right your food should come out tender and moist and will taste absolutely delicious.
Control The Heat Properly
Another tip for cooking with your crock pot for the fist time is to control the heat properly for the food items that you are cooking. If you have to let your items cook for an extended period of time, then chances are it is best if you leave your crock pot temperature setting at a lower level. Using to much heat for an extended period of time can also result in dried out or burnt food that your family simply will not enjoy.
Also, once your food items are done cooking, avoid leaving them in the crock pot for too long after they have been properly cooked. You might want to save the leftovers for a mid day snack the next day or reuse the items the next evening for dinner. You won’t want to use them, however, if you let them sit in the crock pot on warming mode too long after your meal was complete. Why? Because the food will be dried out and tough to eat.
Use Enough Water Or Other Fluids
When you use a crock pot or slow cooker to prepare food items, it’s important that you include enough water or other types of fluids in order to keep the food moist throughout the cooking process. This is especially true if your are cooking things like roasts, chicken, steaks, or other items that normally do not have much water content. Exposing these types of items to heat for extended periods of time can result in a loss of any moisture that they contain.
While the crock pot is designed to keep moisture locked inside of the items while you cook them, it won’t prevent them from becoming dried out after hours of cooking. This is why it’s important to add fluids whenever you are using it.
